National Book Awards
The 2011 National Book Awards were announced yesterday. We can't claim winning author Jesmyn Ward -- she is a southern writer without a doubt -- but she does have ties to Michigan. She received an MFA in fiction from the University of Michigan in 2005. Many of our library patrons are quite familar with some faculty members of the creative writing program at the University of Michigan from the Friends' Classic Books Lecture Series. Salvage the Bones is the author's second novel. Her first, Where the Line Bleeds, is also available at GPPL.
The 2011 nonfiction winner is Stephen Greenblatt for his book The Swerve: How the World Became Modern.
